It’s one of the first big decisions couples make. We’re a band, so we have an opinion, but both choices can be right. Here’s an honest comparison.
Cost
A DJ usually costs less. A live band has more people, more gear, and usually a sound engineer. If budget is the deciding factor, a DJ may be the better fit.
Energy in the room
This is where a live band stands out. Live musicians react to your crowd in real time, stretch a song when the floor is packed, and turn a reception into a concert. Guests talk about a great band for years.
Song variety
A DJ can play any recording ever made. A band plays its repertoire, plus special songs learned on request. Ask a band for its song list and whether it learns first-dance songs.
Space and power
Bands need more stage space and power. Check your venue’s floor plan, especially at smaller or outdoor venues.
Covering the whole day
Many bands can cover the ceremony and cocktail hour with smaller groups or softer sets, then go full-band for the reception. That can replace separate ceremony musicians.
The middle ground
Some couples book a band for the reception and use a playlist during dinner or band breaks. A good band will help you plan that.
When a live band is worth it
If your top priority is a packed dance floor and a reception that feels like an event, a band is worth it. Little Moses Jones plays 90s and 2000s R&B and hip-hop with a six-piece band and our own sound engineer, and one band can cover your whole day. See our wedding page or check your date.
